Wordle Strategy That Solves Most Puzzles in Four Guesses
You open Wordle with your usual starting word, get one yellow letter, and spend the next five guesses circling the answer without landing on it.

You open Wordle with your usual starting word, get one yellow letter, and spend the next five guesses circling the answer without landing on it. A solid Wordle strategy fixes that, and most of it is about the first two guesses rather than clever words at the end.
I have played the daily puzzle since early 2022 and track my results in a notes app. My average dropped from 4.4 guesses to 3.7 once I stopped guessing on instinct and followed the steps below. None of them require a solver or a word list open in another tab.
Pick a starting word that tests common letters
The answer list leans heavily on a handful of letters. E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S and N show up far more than the rest. A good opener tests five of them at once, without repeats, and puts them in positions where they often appear.
Starters that hold up well in analysis and in my own tracking:
- CRANE covers C, R, A, N and E, with E in the last position, where it lands very often.
- SLATE tests S, L, A, T and E, a strong all round pick.
- TRACE works like CRANE but trades N for T.
- ROAST is useful if you want to check the O early.
Pick one and keep it. Using the same opener every day lets you learn how its color patterns usually play out, which speeds up your second guess.
Use guess two to gather, not to win
This is where most players lose a guess. After CRANE shows a yellow A and nothing else, the instinct is to try a word built around A right away. That spends a guess confirming one letter.
Instead, play a second word with five fresh letters. If your opener was CRANE, try something like SOLID, POUTY or BUILT, depending on what you need to test. Between two guesses you now know the status of 10 letters, which covers most of the answer list's common letters.
The exception: if guess one already gives you three or more greens and yellows, start narrowing instead. You have enough to work with.
A simple guess two cheat sheet
| Opener | Good fresh follow-up | New letters tested |
|---|---|---|
| CRANE | SOLID or SPLIT | S, O, L, I, D or S, P, L, I, T |
| SLATE | CORNY or ROUND | C, O, R, N, Y or R, O, U, N, D |
| TRACE | SOLID | S, O, L, I, D |
| ROAST | LINED | L, I, N, E, D |
Read the positions, not just the colors
A yellow letter tells you two things: the letter is in the word, and it is not in that spot. Players often remember the first part and forget the second.
Before each guess, take ten seconds and build a quick mental grid of five positions. For each yellow, cross out the position where it appeared. With two yellows, there are often only two or three ways to arrange them, and seeing that makes the next guess obvious.
Also watch for double letters. Words like SKILL, ELDER, ABBEY and NANNY trip up a lot of streaks. If you are on guess four with only three or four letters confirmed and nothing fits, a repeated letter is the likely reason.
Use the on-screen keyboard as your notes
The keyboard under the grid shows every letter you have tested in gray, yellow or green. Glance at it before each guess and list the untested common letters, usually a few of E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S, N, U, D, H and Y. If your next guess uses three or more of those, you are learning something new even if the guess itself is wrong. If it uses none, you are just hoping. A quick check like this takes five seconds and is the habit that most separates fours from fives.
The counter-take: hard mode is not the better way to play
Online, you will see the claim that serious players use hard mode, where every hint you uncover must be used in later guesses. It is a fine challenge. As a strategy for scoring better, it usually makes you worse.
The classic trap looks like this: you have _IGHT with four greens. Answers could be LIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, FIGHT, SIGHT, TIGHT, RIGHT or WIGHT. In hard mode you must guess them one at a time, and losing the puzzle is a real risk. In normal mode, you can play a word like FILMS to test F, L, M and S at once, then solve on the next turn. If your goal is a lower average and a longer streak, normal mode with smart elimination guesses wins.
A five step routine for every puzzle
- Play your fixed opener.
- If you got two or fewer hits, play a fresh five letter word with no repeats from guess one.
- List every yellow letter's forbidden positions before guess three.
- If several answers fit and you have guesses to spare, play a word that splits them rather than guessing one.
- Before you hit enter, check for double letters and less common letters like Y, H and K.
This routine takes about two to four minutes per puzzle, which makes Wordle a good fit for the kind of short breaks covered in our list of five minute puzzle games for waiting rooms and commutes.
Why the same logic helps in other puzzles
Wordle rewards the same habit as most logic puzzles: gather information before you commit. If you enjoy that feeling, try the elimination methods in our Sudoku solving techniques for beginners. Players who like arithmetic can move on to KenKen puzzle strategy, which uses the same "what can this cell not be" thinking.
One last tip. Do not play when you are tired or rushed. My worst results, sixes and losses, almost all came from late night guesses where I skipped the position check. The puzzle will still be there after your coffee.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best starting word for Wordle?
Words like CRANE, SLATE and TRACE score well because they test five common letters with no repeats. The exact best choice changes a little depending on how you measure it. Picking one strong word and using it every day matters more than finding the perfect one.
How do you get Wordle in three guesses?
Use a strong opener, then a second word with five new letters to learn the status of ten letters. On guess three, place your yellow letters only in positions they have not tried. This setup solves a good share of puzzles in three and most in four.
Is hard mode in Wordle harder to win?
Yes, for most players it raises the average number of guesses. It blocks elimination guesses, so puzzles with many similar answers, such as words ending in IGHT or OUND, can force you to guess one option at a time.
