Balatro for Players Who Never Learned Poker Hands

A hand of playing cards on a phone screen with a score counter multiplying above them

A friend from my Sunday rummy table installed Balatro on her phone last month, played three runs, and texted me a screenshot of a pair of sevens with the message "why is this worth 34 points and why am I losing?" She had never played poker in her life. The game assumes you know what a full house is, and then quietly changes what a full house is worth, which leaves newcomers confused twice over.

If that sounds like you, the good news is that Balatro is not a poker game in any way that matters. Nobody bets anything. There is no opponent reading your face. It is a scoring puzzle that borrows poker's vocabulary, and once you see the arithmetic underneath, the vocabulary stops mattering much. I learned rummy before I learned to read, and I think rummy players actually have an advantage here, for reasons I will get to.

The one sum the whole game runs on

Every hand you play in Balatro produces two numbers: Chips and Mult. Your score for that hand is Chips multiplied by Mult. That is the whole engine. Everything else in the game, every Joker, every tarot card, every upgrade, exists to push one of those two numbers up.

Chips come from two places. The poker hand you made gives a base amount, and then each card that counts toward the hand adds its own value: a number card adds its face value, a Jack, Queen or King adds 10, and an Ace adds 11. Mult comes almost entirely from the hand type at the start of a run.

So my friend's pair of sevens worked like this. A Pair has a base of 10 Chips and 2 Mult. The two sevens add 14 Chips. That gives 24 Chips times 2 Mult, which is 48. Her screenshot said 34 because one of her sevens had been debuffed by the boss she was facing, and a debuffed card still helps form the Pair but adds no Chips, so she got 17 times 2. Small detail, but it is exactly the sort of thing the game never spells out.

Here are the base values for the nine standard hands, which you will see printed in the run info screen once you know where to look:

HandBase ChipsBase MultWhat it needs
High Card51Nothing, your highest card scores
Pair102Two cards of the same rank
Two Pair202Two different pairs
Three of a Kind303Three of one rank
Straight304Five ranks in a row, any suits
Flush354Five cards of one suit
Full House404Three of a kind plus a pair
Four of a Kind607Four of one rank
Straight Flush1008A straight, all one suit

Look at the Mult column more than the Chips column. Mult is the multiplier, so it scales everything you add later. Going from 2 Mult to 4 Mult doubles the score of the whole hand, while going from 10 Chips to 35 Chips barely registers once the cards themselves are adding 40 or 50.

Why the real poker ranking will mislead you

The standard beginner advice is "learn the poker hand rankings first." I would push back on that. In real poker, a flush beats a straight because a flush is rarer when you are dealt five cards and stuck with them. Balatro deals you eight cards, gives you four hands and three discards per round, and lets you throw away up to five cards at a time. Under those rules, rarity looks completely different.

Flushes become easy. With eight cards in hand and a few discards, you can usually fish for five hearts within a round. Straights become harder than their poker reputation suggests, because you need five consecutive ranks and the deck does not care about your plans. Four of a Kind, which feels like a miracle in a real poker game, shows up more than you would expect once you start removing cards from your deck.

This is where rummy helps. A rummy player already thinks in sets (same rank) and runs (same suit, consecutive ranks), and already knows the habit of holding a card for two turns because it might complete something. Balatro rewards that holding pattern. My rule of thumb, which works for me but I would not call it law: if you are three cards from a flush and have two discards left, discard toward the flush. If you are two cards from a straight with a gap in the middle, play what you have.

What a round actually asks of you

A run is split into Antes. Each Ante has three Blinds: a Small Blind, a Big Blind, and a Boss Blind with a special rule attached, such as debuffing every club or forcing you to play exactly five cards. Beating the Boss Blind of Ante 8 wins the run.

The score targets climb fast. In Ante 1 on the default stake, the Small Blind wants 300, the Big Blind 450, and the Boss 600. By Ante 2 the Small Blind already wants 800. Here is the trap new players walk into: a decent Flush of hearts with a Jack, a nine, a seven, a five and a two scores 35 plus 33 Chips, so 68 Chips, times 4 Mult. That is 272. It does not even clear the first Small Blind alone. You have four hands per round, so you will survive Ante 1 on raw cards, but by Ante 3 the numbers have outrun anything a plain deck can produce.

That gap is the point of the game. The cards in your hand get you started. The Jokers you buy in the shop between rounds carry you the rest of the way.

Jokers, in plain terms

There are 150 Jokers, and you can hold five at once unless something expands your slots. Most of them do one of three things: add flat Chips, add flat Mult, or multiply Mult. The third kind, usually written as "X Mult" on the card, is the one that wins runs, because it multiplies after the additions.

A cheap example from my own early runs: the plain Joker gives +4 Mult to every hand. On that 272-point Flush, the Mult goes from 4 to 8 and the score becomes 544. One common card, double the score. Order matters too. Jokers trigger from left to right, so a +Mult Joker should sit to the left of an X Mult Joker, which you can arrange by dragging them.

Planet cards and why one hand type matters

Planet cards level up a single hand type. Jupiter levels Flush, Mercury levels Pair, Pluto levels High Card, and so on. Each level adds both Chips and Mult to that hand permanently for the run. Because of this, most winning runs I have seen commit to one or two hand types by Ante 3 and pour every Planet into them. Spreading upgrades across five hand types feels safe and almost always fails around Ante 5 or 6.

A first run plan that works for most people

When my rummy friend tried again, I gave her this short plan, and she beat Ante 8 on her ninth attempt:

  • Pick Flush as your hand. It is the most forgiving with eight cards and three discards.
  • In the first two shops, buy any Joker that adds Mult, even a boring one.
  • Take every Jupiter you see. Skip Planets for hands you are not playing.
  • Before each Boss Blind, read its rule. If it debuffs a suit, check whether that suit is your flush suit, and plan to play Pairs that round instead.
  • Keep at least one Joker slot for an X Mult card by Ante 4, even if it means selling something you like.

She told me the moment it clicked was realizing she had never once needed to know whether a straight beats three of a kind. She only needed to know which hand she was building and what her Mult was.

If you came to Balatro from the casual side rather than the card side, our piece on what makes a digital card game worth returning to explains why this one keeps people around for months, and the wider games section has more on card-driven puzzles. Players who like the counting side might also enjoy our tips for puzzle games, since Balatro is closer to that shelf than to anything in a casino.

One thing to try this week: open a run, pause on the first hand, and work out the score by hand before you press Play. Chips from the table, plus each card's value, times Mult. Do that five times and the numbers on screen will stop feeling random.
